Bird Hats and Nest Building Kids Activities Blog

bird 2We had and then much fun with our bird theme today!   Nosotros made adorable bird hats and and so nerveless $.25 of cord and other materials to lace into a nest.   This activity was suitable and enjoyable for my (almost) iii yr old, tin can easily be enriched for use with older children.

Materials Needed:
HATS:
– Bird hat Pattern (cut out pieces for younger children)
– mucilage/tape/ stapler
– markers
– Coloured paper (bill of fare stock is platonic, particularly if embellishing with feathers, but construction newspaper or printer newspaper would work every bit well)
-Scissors
– feathers, googly eyes or other tactile decorations (optional)

bird 3NEST:
– hole punch
– thin cardboard (such as an erstwhile cereal box) or a paper/ Styrofoam basin
-$.25 of string, twine, cloth strands, I even cut upward the mesh plastic that our avocados came in
– large sewing needle or a pipe cleaner or piece of wire which can exist twisted into a bones needle. (optional)

FOR THE HATS:
1. Cutting 2 strips lengthwise from a slice of paper to be fastened into hat band.   Adjust the size appropriately and tape/glue together.
2. Decorate the pieces of the bird.   Add feathers to the wings or googly eyes if you have them available, otherwise decorate with markers or other on mitt materials.
3.Adhere the beak to the head of the bird past gluing but the bottom one-half of the beak down and folding the top half over. (see photographs)
four.   Attach wings, tail feathers and caput to the chapeau band.   Each piece has a flat spot meant to be lined up with the lesser of the ring.   The apartment areas of the wings are indicated on the pattern with a dotted line.
5. put on your hats and movement on to nest building activity.

NEST BUILDING
1. Accept prepare a   Pre-cutting and punched nest.   I simply cut a half circle from a piece of cardboard, but I think a newspaper basin that could be punched would as well be wonderful.   Dial out holes randomly all over your nest.
2. As well pre-"hide" strings and other nest building materials cleverly around your project surface area.   I hung bits of cord from chairs, doorknobs, draped off counter etc.
iii.   Fluttering and tweeting like little birds my son and I went effectually our kitchen looking for things to employ to build a nest.   He loved the treasure hunt and carrying things back to his nest in his "beak".
iv. Once enough string has been collected have or help the child lace the cord through.   We made it our goal to fill every hole, only employ each hole only once.   With this activeness there is no need to worry almost not bad, orderly stitching as the chaos contributes nicely to the "nest" look of the finished product.   Being not quite 3, my son had a limited attention span for this activeness, but was willing to assistance poke the "needle" through several times and did a lot of pulling thread through the carte.

IMG_7381ENRICHMENT:
– Wait at pictures of real birds and imitate colour schemes when edifice hats.   Notice information near the habitat and even what the nest of that particular bird looks similar.
– Older children may desire to try to build   a more realistic nest using mud and twigs.
– give more than structure to the lacing activity.   (lace along top holes beginning)

– Pretend to be a bird afterwards y'all have made your bird hats.   Where would you lot become?   What would you eat if you lot were a bird?
